As soon as spring begins, one of the first places I love to focus on is the garden. Actually… if I'm being honest, I’m always working in the garden. For me, it’s truly the best place at home peaceful, green, and full of life.
But every year, the garden also brings its challenges. Mine is overflowing with plants and vegetables, so you can imagine the amount of maintenance needed after winter. Cleaning, reorganizing, preparing the soil… it’s a full job!
So this year, I wanted to create something simple, clean, and easy to recreate for anyone who dreams of upgrading their outdoor space.
And that’s how this DIY wooden planter box project was born.
Good news?
I’ve also made a free downloadable plan so you can follow along and build the exact same model at home.👉 Click here to download the free plan.
Why Build Your Own Planter Box?
A wooden planter box is one of the easiest upgrades you can make to any garden. It allows you to:
Add structure and design to your outdoor space
Elevate flowers, herbs, or vegetables
Use natural materials
Customize the size, height, and style
Save money compared to buying ready-made planters
And most importantly it’s a fun, relaxing DIY project you can finish in just a couple of hours.
Materials I Used
For my planter box, I used:
4 pieces of lumber
Length: 2.3 meters
Width: 20 cm
Thickness: 3 cm
But remember you’re the boss of your creation!Feel free to use any type of wood or dimension you already have in your workshop.
Step-by-Step: How I Built My Wooden Planter Box
1. Cut All the Side and Bottom Slats
I started by cutting all the pieces needed for the sides and bottom. Make sure your cuts are clean and consistent so the assembly is easier later.
2. Lay the Slats on a Flat Surface
I placed all my slats on the table to organize them.(Yes, this is the same table I used for my Shou Sugi Ban wood-burning project! If you’re curious about that technique, you can check out the full tutorial on the blog.)
3. Measure the Top and Bottom Rails
Once everything was laid out, I measured the lengths needed for the top and bottom rails.
4. Cut the Rails With the Miter Saw
Back to the miter saw!Always double-check your measurements before cutting—once it’s done, there's no way back.
After the cuts, I ripped the rails in half using the table saw.
5. Assembling the First Side
Here’s where the box really takes shape.
Mark 3 cm on each side
Line up the slats
Attach them securely
Then mark 3 cm from the bottom of the bottom rail and attach again
This ensures consistent spacing and a clean, modern look.
Repeat the same steps for the other sides.
And That’s It—Your DIY Wooden Planter Box Is Ready!
Simple, clean, minimalistic—and 100% handmade by you.
This project is perfect for beginners, easy to customize, and brings a beautiful natural touch to any garden or terrace.
