Using pallet wood not only saves money it also helps save trees and gives old wood a brand-new life.
Why Make a Planter from Pallet Wood?
Pallet wood is:
Free or very cheap
Strong and durable
Perfect for outdoor DIY projects
Ideal for a rustic and natural garden look
A great way to recycle and reduce waste
This square planter is large, stable, and ideal for flowers, herbs, or small plants.
Tools and Materials You’ll Need

3D Plan for this project available here.
Step 1 – Cleaning and Preparing the Pallet Wood
Start by removing all nails from the pallet boards.
Next, clean and smooth the wood:

Use a planer to remove the rough top layer
If you don’t have a planer, sand the boards thoroughly
Once clean, measure the pieces according to the size of the planter you want to build.
Step 2 – Cutting the Wood and Assembling the Panels
Cut all your boards to the required dimensions.
Begin by assembling the side panels of the planter.

Once the panels are ready, assemble them together to create the main square frame.
Make sure everything is well aligned and securely screwed.
Step 3 – Sanding, Supports, and Finishing Touches
After assembly, sand the entire structure to make the surface smooth and safe.
Adding the bottom supports

Fix support pieces inside the planter, near the bottom.
To create rounded corners on the top edges, you can trace a curve using a round object like a pot before cutting.
Once the supports are in place, reinforce the bottom of the planter with extra pallet slats.
Step 4 – Painting and Top Frame
Paint the planter in the color of your choice. I used a grey finish to give it a modern look while keeping the wood visible.

Finally, add extra pallet slats on the top edges to create a strong and decorative upper frame.
A Project Built for the Circular Economy Village 2022 in Guadeloupe

This square pallet planter was created live during the Le Village de l’Économie Circulaire (2022 edition), an event organized by the Région Guadeloupe to promote recycling, reuse of materials, and sustainable local initiatives.
The goal of this live build was to demonstrate how discarded pallet wood can be transformed into a useful and decorative garden object instead of being thrown away.
By building this planter in front of visitors, the project showed that:
Recycled materials have real value
Anyone can build useful objects with simple tools
DIY fits perfectly with the circular economy
Pallet wood is an excellent material for sustainable creations
This planter is therefore not just a garden object it is a real example of circular economy in action.
Final Result
You now have a beautiful square pallet planter box, made entirely from recycled wood, perfect for outdoor use and garden decoration.
This planter is:
Strong
Decorative
Eco-friendly
Easy to customize in size and color
