A small garden pond instantly adds calm, beauty, and atmosphere to your outdoor space. With just a shovel and a few materials, you can build your own relaxing water feature in a single afternoon.

Here’s how to do it.
What You Need
Shovel & trowel
Garden hose
Plank of wood + spirit level
Pond liner
Sand or pond underlay (or newspaper)
Bricks & landscaping rocks
Fountain pump
Optional: black vinyl tape, cement + bucket
Steps to Build Your Pond
1. Choose the Location
Pick a spot with half sun, half shade. Avoid large trees and areas where rainwater flows in.
2. Mark and Dig
Use a garden hose to draw your pond shape. Dig the hole, making a deeper center if you plan to add fish.
3. Level the Edges
Place a plank across the edges and level it. This keeps the water line even.
4. Prepare the Bottom
Cover the soil with sand, pond underlay, or thick newspaper to protect the liner.
5. Install the Liner
Lay the pond liner inside the hole, press it into place, and fill the pond halfway to settle it.
6. Add the Pump
Place the fountain pump at the bottom and run the cable safely to your outlet.
7. Finish the Edges
Use bricks or rocks around the pond to hide the liner and secure everything.
8. Fill and Decorate
Fill the pond completely and add aquatic plants. If you want fish, wait 48 hours before introducing them.
Enjoy Your Pond
That’s it! In a few simple steps, you’ve created your own peaceful garden pond—perfect for relaxing outdoors.
