How to Build a DIY Hexagon Wall Desk | Modern Floating Desk for Small Spaces

Looking for a unique DIY wall desk that combines modern design with practical storage? In this woodworking project, I'll show you how I built a hexagon-shaped floating desk for my daughter. This stylish wall-mounted workstation not only saves space but also becomes a beautiful decorative feature in any bedroom, study room, or home office.

Whether you're an experienced woodworker or simply looking for your next DIY furniture project, this guide will walk you through the main construction steps.

Why I Built This Hexagon Wall Desk

When my little princess started school, I wanted to create something special that would grow with her over the years. Instead of buying a standard desk, I designed a modern hexagonal wall desk that would be:

  • Space-saving

  • Durable and strong

  • Stylish and unique

  • Functional for studying and creative activities

  • A beautiful piece of wall decoration even when not in use

The result is Queeni, a modern floating desk inspired by geometric design.

This project was created in collaboration with Walabot DIY, whose technology helped during the build process.

Materials

For this project you'll need:

  • Solid wood boards

  • Plywood sheets

  • Wood glue

  • Wood screws

  • Cabinet hinges

  • Primer

  • Paint

  • Sandpaper

  • Wall mounting hardware

  • Finishing materials

Step 1 – Preparing the Wood

Everything starts with selecting quality wood.

Since every side of the hexagon must be identical, accurate measurements are essential. Even a small difference can prevent the frame from fitting together correctly.

Using the miter saw, I cut the six main pieces that will form the hexagon.

Step 2 – Flatten and Plane the Boards

Before assembling the frame, every board needs perfectly straight edges.

Using a thickness planer, I flattened each board to ensure they all had the same thickness and smooth surfaces.

This preparation makes the final assembly much easier and results in cleaner joints.

Step 3 – Assemble the Hexagon Frame

This is definitely the most challenging part of the project.

Each board must have:

  • Exactly the same length

  • Identical thickness

  • Perfect 30° cuts

  • Straight edges

Precision is the secret to creating a perfect hexagon.

Fortunately, if you follow the measurements included in the free 3D plans, the process becomes much easier.

After applying wood glue and clamps, the six pieces slowly transform into the beautiful geometric frame.

Step 4 – Create the Rear Groove

To install the rear panel, I routed a groove along the inside of the frame.

This allows the plywood back panel to fit perfectly inside the desk while keeping the structure clean and strong.

I also routed a matching groove for the center divider.

Step 5 – Install the Back Panel

Using my plunge saw, I cut the plywood to the exact dimensions before attaching it to the back of the frame.

At this stage, the project really starts looking like a finished piece of furniture.

The structure becomes much stronger once the back panel is installed.

Step 6 – Build the Shelves

Now it's time to transform the frame into a practical workspace.

I added several custom shelves to maximize storage while maintaining the modern hexagonal design.

These shelves are perfect for:

  • School books

  • Decorative plants

  • Office supplies

  • Picture frames

  • Small storage boxes

The goal was to create a desk that's both beautiful and functional.

Step 7 – Paint and Install the Cabinet Doors

The final step is always the most satisfying.

After carefully sanding every surface, I applied primer and several coats of paint before installing the cabinet doors using concealed hinges.

The clean finish gives the desk a modern Scandinavian look that fits almost any interior.

The Finished Result

After many hours of woodworking, sanding, painting, and assembling, the Queeni Hexagon Wall Desk was finally complete.

The finished desk provides:

✔ Modern geometric design

✔ Space-saving wall-mounted construction

✔ Hidden storage

✔ Functional workspace

✔ Beautiful room decoration

Most importantly, my daughter absolutely loves it!
