If you are looking for a cheap way to build beautiful garden furniture, you might already have the material at home without knowing it.
Old wooden fence panels are made from strong outdoor wood, perfectly suited for building DIY garden benches, patio chairs, and outdoor seating that can last for years.

Instead of throwing your fence away, you can transform it into a modern and comfortable outdoor bench and chair set using simple tools and basic woodworking techniques.
I was very happy to be nominated and receive my green pin from Loes Ypma the representative of the Floriade and the Growing green cities program.

In this step-by-step tutorial, I will show you how to turn reclaimed fence wood into stunning patio seating furniture for your garden.
Tools and Materials Needed
Step 1 – Dismantle the Fence Panel
Start by unscrewing all the slats from the fence panel. Keep every board and the long posts nothing is wasted in this project.

Step 2 – Clean and Plane the Wood
Because fence wood stays outside for years, it is usually rough and dirty. Run each slat through a planer or sand them well to bring the wood back to life.

Step 3 – Cut the Posts for the Legs and Frame
Use the long fence posts to create the legs and structural frame of the bench and chairs. Cut them to size and prepare angled cuts for a modern design.

Step 4 – Prepare the Seat Boards
Use the fence slats to create the seat and the backrest. Arrange them based on the cushion size you want for maximum comfort.

Step 5 – Round the Edges
Use a router or sanding technique to soften all edges. This gives a professional furniture look and avoids sharp corners.

Step 6 – Assemble the Legs and Frame
Pre-drill holes and screw the frame together. Fence wood is strong, so pre-drilling is important.

Step 7 – Install the Seat and Backrest
Fix the slats onto the frame to create the seat and backrest of your DIY patio chairs and bench.

Step 8 – Apply Protective Oil
Apply a coat of outdoor protective oil to protect the wood from weather conditions.

Step 9 – Paint (Optional)
You can leave the natural wood look or paint your furniture for a more colorful garden style.
