Featherbeds have become enormously popular over the last few years. A feather bed is a mattress topper, which is thicker and sumptuous than cotton and polyester and is filled with either only feathers or a combination of down and feather. It goes on top of your mattress under the fitted sheet and adds pure comfort and delivers a much better sleep.
In the past featherbed were simply a bag of feathers. They have evolved with time and today the majority of featherbeds are made of 95% duck feathers and 5% duck down, which are not considered a luxury. Goose down however is much better than duck because it has larger clusters, and it is better to have at least 50-50 ratio feather-down because most feathers are hard and crunchy and often tend to leak out of the feather-proof casing. If the bed is made of 100% down, it is being called a down bed.

The luxury featherbeds use a combination of white goose down and down and a large percentage of high fill-power goose down or even all down. The ability of the clusters to loft up after they are compressed is expressed in fill powers. The higher fill-power, the puffer featherbeds. A 650 fill-power and higher is considered a luxury. The more down in the featherbed means more luxurious look and more comfort. If you want more luxury to sink into get a down bed and that is all white goose down for a softer and puffier look and feel.
The three most common styles are baffle box, a three compartment one or a channel. Most popular is the baffle box with at least 10 cm baffle to keep the filling from unwanted shifting.

Make sure you always use a cover to protect the featherbed. Choose a cover that will allow the filing to loft up and choose one that has zippers on the sides for easy removal. Also fluff the featherbed and turn it over weekly after you wash the cover. Every 3 years send it to a bedding specialist for cleaning and renovate it in 7 to 10 years. If you want to get the full loft on featherbed invest in extra deep fitted sheets, but do not get extra tight fitted because it will make the bed flatter and will defeat the purpose of having a high down luxury one.
As you can see, it is worth investing in a quality featherbed since it delivers unparalleled level of comfort. When you are ready to purchase one go to a specialist who will ensure a wide selection to from and is knowledgeable enough to offer you expert service and cleaning/renovating tips to get the most out of your featherbed.
